What are Center for Loss Trainings for Bereavement Caregivers?
In addition to other grief-related resources, the Center for Loss and Life Transition
provides quality bereavement care training for caregivers. Dr. Wolfelt's seminars have evolved
out of a demand for concise yet comprehensive information on compassionate grief care.
If you want to learn practical ways to "walk with" people in grief from one of North America's most
loved bereavement care experts, these learning opportunities are for you.
Where are the training seminars held?
All courses allow 18 participants and are taught at the Center for Loss retreat setting in the mountain foothills
on the western edge of Fort Collins. Comprehensive Bereavement Skills Training participants will be invited to tour the Center
while they are here, and after they have graduated from the initial course, will be welcome to attend any seminar at the Center.
Where is the Center For Loss?
The Center for Loss is located on the western edge of Fort Collins, Colorado in the Rocky Mountain foothills. We've found
this tranquil retreat to be an ideal learning environment. Our hexagonal-shaped Center offers breathtaking views of both the city
below and the Rocky Mountains to the west. Rocky Mountain National Park is a short 45-minute drive away.
Who should attend?
These seminars are designed to meet the needs of people from a variety of backgrounds, including hospice
staff and volunteers, mental health care providers, social workers, clergy, school personnel, funeral directors, nurses
and physicians, students and other interested professionals, and lay people.
Your background statement
Should you wish to attend, we will require a written statement of your background and interest in bereavement
care. While there is no specific educational degree requirement, each applicant is required to demonstrate a commitment
to the compassionate care of the bereaved. Please include the following information in your background statement: name,
age, occupation, brief work history, losses in your own life, interest in the particular seminar(s) you have selected and
anything else you think we should know. In addition to being a screening tool, this statement helps us get to know you
before you arrive at the Center.
How will attending help me?
Caregivers benefit in many ways from our seminars. We will help you:
- Become more familiar with the grief process.
- Enhance your ability to relate effectively to the grieving person or
family.
- Develop new skills to cope with personal feelings related to death and
grief.
- Receive resource materials to facilitate continued learning.
- Hone skills in the helping relationship.
- Expand your knowledge of current discipline developments.
- Heighten your awareness of resources in the areas of death, dying, grief
and bereavement.
We've also found that Center for Loss seminars, because of the magical setting and the camaraderie that naturally unfolds, are spiritual, "life-giving" experiences for caregivers.

A Time to Learn
The Center for Loss is not just a professional forum, but a respite, a place for those who care for others to care for themselves.
After our van returns you to your hotel in the late afternoon, evenings are yours to spend as you wish. Fort Collins' quaint yet lively "Old Town"
area is packed with wonderful restaurants and shops. Newly-forged seminar friendships often make for fun dinner theater outings or foothills excursions.
Let us make recommendations and/or reservations for you. Tuesday after class (for seminars held at the Center for Loss), you'll enjoy hors d'oeuvres
and social time (4 p.m. to 5 p.m.) at Alan's gracious home next door to the Center. We also encourage all seminar participants to build-in time to
"just be" on the Friday of each retreat week. Your discounted lodging is good through Thursday night, so do yourself a favor and consider a visit to
Rocky Mountain National Park to close-off your Colorado experience!
Honoring Our Stories
Alan has found that an essential element of all Center for Loss learning experiences is the honoring of each other's life journeys. On the first morning
of your retreat, you will be gently invited to express who you are, what losses have touched your life and why you've come to the Center for the seminar you've chosen.
Tuition
Tuition for each of our courses is $775. Tuition includes all seminar materials, breakfasts
and lunches. Because space is limited, a non-refundable $250 deposit is required to confirm your registration. The tuition balance is due and
non-refundable six weeks before the seminar. However, it is transferable within one year to another class should an emergency cause you to cancel.
Tax Deductibility
The expenses of continuing education, when taken to maintain and improve professional skills, are tax deductible. Please consult your accountant for complete details.
Continuing Education Units
Caregivers are eligible to receive 3 CEUs from Colorado State University's Educational Outreach for each 4-day Center for Loss seminar
they complete. CSU's CEU fee is $50 per seminar. CEU credit must be applied for in advance of the seminar you will be attending. Please let us know before
you arrive if you would like to earn CEUs for your participation.
