About the Center for Loss

Founded in 1983 by Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt, the Center for Loss and Life Transition is a private organization dedicated to furthering our understanding of -and compassion for- the complex set of emotions we call grief. Our mission is to help both the bereaved, by walking with them in their unique life journeys, and bereavement caregivers, by serving as their educational liaison and professional forum. Our motto is "helping people help others."

Located in the Rocky Mountain foothills on the western edge of Fort Collins, Colorado, the Center for Loss serves its mission through a combination of workshops and publications.

Workshops

Dr. Wolfelt dedicates more than 80 days a year to teaching workshops across North America each year. Respected for his educational contributions and loved for his compassionate, engaging presence, Dr. Wolfelt is a popular presenter at hospices, universities, funeral homes, churches, schools and other organizations that want to provide grief education to community members, area professionals and staff members.

Dr. Wolfelt also teaches 4 day retreat-oriented learning experiences for bereavement caregivers here at the Center for Loss in Fort Collins. These popular courses are the culmination of his passion for and years of experience in grief counseling. Now he focuses on teaching others to "companion" those in grief.

Publications

A prolific author, Dr. Wolfelt has published numerous books on grief through his publishing company, Companion Press. Some of the books are for mourners themselves -both adults and children- and some are for bereavement caregivers. We invite you to browse through our Bookstore.
